New Room

We've had the door to his room closed for nearly 5 months. And, as much as I could have kept avoiding it, Gary knew it was time. He had an idea to turn Carter's room into a special place, functional yet healing. So, we got boxes. We needed eight big tubs to contain all of the stuff. Blankets, clothes, stuffed animals, and memories. We will sort through most of it later, but we kept out a few special items.
Anyway, we took out the crib, moved the changing table across the room, and added a desk. We turned his closet into a tall bookcase, and we placed some of those special things in the room to remind us of him. This is our new favorite place. It doesn't hurt now to go into this room. I feel an incredible sense of peace knowing that I'm surrounded by his things.
Here are a few pictures of the old nursery:

And here is the room as it is today:

Hello Sarah, Gary, and Carter-
I've been a silent observer of your blog for the last 5 months or so. I've started to leave a comment many times, and then I've changed my mind. Sarah's face looks so familiar to me. I know I wasn't in the room during Carter's birth, but I am convinced we met sometime the night before. I had heard of Carter's fight, but I didn't know about this site until later...Anyway- the reason I comment today...
Your story always touches my heart. When I feel myself losing faith because of one thing or another that is going on in my own world, I come here and read. It strengthens me to read about the tremendous faith and love you have in God, and in each other, and the love you have for little Carter. Your new room is great! It's both a symbol of growth and of healing. Carter will never be far from your thoughts, and he will certainly never leave your hearts, but now you can enjoy his room as a family.
Perhaps our paths will cross again sometime. In the meantime, I look forward to hearing of your continued journey through this thing called life....

Sarah & Gary:
I am so impressed with the new room. I can't imagine that this step was easy, but I know that it must have been very cathartic to get in there with his things and make a space for the three of you to dwell comfortably. I am so proud of you, and so inspired by all three of you. You are so amazing to me. I love you all!!

I don't know how you guys do it, but you are some of the most amazing people I have ever met! All three of you! Moriah and I saw Gary at Target the other night and we saw the new bracelets you guys got nad they are just precious! I am glad that you could finally take off the hospital band that you wore for so long, I'm sure just to feel still connected with him in some way. You will always be in Carter's life and he will always be in yours. I love what you guys have done with the nursery and I am sure that it wasn't an easy step to take, but it's a big one that you apparently felt ready for and got through alright! We still love you guys so much and well, I hope to see you again soon! Much love, Trisha

It is really great to see the room and what you all have done. My children and I really hope you all enjoy you christmas present we gave to you all tonight. It is a tradition in our family to give ornaments each year for the tree. I just felt that the one we have given to you was very fitting. As the holidays approach you know that you are all three surrounded by more love than you ever know. You are all in my thoughts daily. With much love and support.....Moriah and family

Good Job! It is important in your healing processes to make changes where you need to make them. Well done. I am sure little Carter approves too.
Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving.
Blessings,

Haven't talked to you in so long. I love the big picture of Carter over the desk. That should bring you joy looking at it as you work.

How are you feeling after your surgery? Didn't know you had been in the hospital for your heart also. We're praying for you Sarah.
Saw Rebecca at church and she gave me some updates. Her hair looks beautiful. Like the new cut.

Wanted to let you know that mom fell and fractured 3 ribs. We went to Indiana for her 80th birthday, her party was that night and she fell. Not a good way to celebrate. If you get a chance send her a card Bev Brennan, 2327 Steeple Chase, Shelbyville, Indiana 46176. Jake was there so that was a joy to her. Look on Jesse's blog. They just got back from their trip to Mt. Everest.

Love you both, take care Jane
